US cellphones and British mobile phones don't always like traveling overseas. Some won't work in some countries, others are too expensive. The answer may be to rent one

In the USA they're cellphones, in the UK and Ireland they're mobile phones, but whatever we call them they often don't like traveling abroad. What solutions are there, then, if your mobile/cellphone either won't work in the country you're planning to visit, or it will work but the roaming call charges are way too high? The answer may be to rent one for a short-term hire.

Companies are catching on to the fact that being on holiday doesn't mean being away from your mobile/cellphone. You might want to get away from it all, but your mobile/cellphone is one way of making sure you have all the important phone numbers with you, in case of emergencies. And if you're going on a fly-drive vacation, it's just common sense to have a phone in the car with you, in case of breakdowns.

One British company that has addressed the problem head-on is Adam Phones. They specialise in the short-term hire of mobile/cellphones for US visitors to the UK and Ireland, and for British visitors to the USA, but having been in the business of short-term phone hire for twenty years they can rent phones to anyone going anywhere.

Adam Phones are also members of ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) in the UK, and of ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents) in the USA, so are secure to deal with. They are an approved supplier to both those organisations, and the BBC also uses their services. So do journalists from Britain traveling overseas, and Adam Phones also supply mobile/cellphones to the US Embassy in London for visiting American politicians and diplomats.

The company's business partners include Hertz and Travelex, so if you're renting a car from Hertz you can arrange to collect your mobile/cellphone at the same time, or if you change currency with Travelex at your arrival airport.

One advantage of arranging rental in advance is that you have time to pass your temporary number out to friends or business colleagues. Adam Phones even provides business cards for you with your temporary phone number on it, and the dates it is in operation. Voicemail is included, as is a leather case and a carry bag. And if you're a Blackberry addict, you can get a Blackberry on short-term hire too.

Now this is a good idea - there's nothing more frustrating than taking your mobile abroad only to find it doesn't work.

Yes, and you need the recharger as well, which is just one extra thing to lug on a flight, especially if you like to travel light.
