And if any of your grandparents were Irish you are entitled to have an Irish passport.

Isn't that what Spike Milligan did? What was that story - the British wouldn't give him a passport because he was born in India, but the Irish were delighted to give him one.

Unfortunately only my great-grandparents were irish - does a grandma who was half-Irish count?

No luck on the half Irish grannie. And Spike, as far as I know, was Irish.

Next year's Celtic Connections has one of the best selections for a long while. New Director Donald Shaw (Capercaillie) has pulled out all the stops. And there's a wee bit of nepotism with his wife, Karen Matheson, appearing on the guest list. Unfortunately I can't make her gig.
But I am going to see performances by Kate Rusby, Karine Polwart, Roseanne Cash, Jerry Douglas, Luka Bloom, Dervish and the Transatlantic Sessions.
I predict lots of late nights and some nice wee pub sessions afterwards. I don't intend doing a whole lot of work in January.

I'm really envious. Sounds like a wonderful time. Makes you want to live in Glasgow. Celtic Connections is reason enough to be there.

Glasgow is one of the finest cities in Europe and probably the friendliest. Never go to Glasgow if you want to be alone. Sit on one of the benches in George Square and ten minutes someone will join you and be engaging you in conversation.

It is a grand place to live particularly now with the regeneration of the River Clyde but I would still rather live in my small village 70 miles to the south. I can drive to Glasgow from here in 90 minutes.

Yes, anyone thinking of visiting Scotland and only going to Edinburgh is missing out on something. Glasgow's so close and has a complete different character.

I know just what you mean about people coming up and talking to you in George Square, but I find that if you give them 50p they go away again.
