» Amanda Kendle - Irish travel ...

Hi Mike,
Hmm, good point, all those great stories coming out of Ireland! I've still not read "McCarthy's Bar" but always remember that it got so highly recommended to me by a New Zealander I met in Tunisia a couple of years ago. Here I was, backpacking and hostelling around what I thought was one of the most fascinating countries in the world, and this guy was sitting at the train station reading about Ireland, and said that was the best part of his trip. Now, I'm sure it's a good book, but why go to Tunisia if you're not going to open your eyes? The image of this guy has stuck with me ever since, and as a result I've never been able to read McCarthy's Bar. Maybe one day ...
cheers
Amanda

I can understand your aversion! I've been in places with people who have been passing through the most stunning scenery, which they will probably only ever pass through once in their life, and they spend the time either reading a book or chatting away, oblivious to the beauty around them.

But do give McCarthy's Bar a chance. It is a very funny travel book, and its successor, The Road to McCarthy, equally good.
