Welcome Mike, and I'm already jealous of you, after reading about your meeting with Bill Bryson. I guess it's a cliche for a travel writer to be a fan of his but as an Aussie, I've always loved his book on Oz (titled either "Down Under" or "In a Sunburned Country", depending on where you are) and give it as a gift to my German friends here (in German translation) regularly. Though I could hit him for perpetuating the idea that Australia is dominated by dangerous animals .. Welcome again Mike and I look forward to reading more at your topic here.

Thanks, Amanda. I've met Australian guys in London so I know the country's populated by dangerous animals.

I love Bill Bryson's work. I think he gets a bit under-rated, too. In order to be as funny as he is you have to be a good writer, to use words really well, and also to be very observant.

His books about language are really interesting too.
