If the Travel Editor of The Times can't provide the best travel advice, then who can? Here are her ten best travel tips from her newly published Holiday Handbook

I've posted a review of The Times Holiday Handbook by Cath Urquhart in the Articles section, and you can read it by clicking here. I wanted to give a flavor of the down-to-earth advice that the book is packed with, so here are the author's all-time top ten travel tips:
  • Don't over-plan your trip: stay flexible
  • Always take out travel insurance
  • A good travel agent can save you money, especially for long-haul trips
  • When booking a trip, if in doubt, get it in writing
  • Take the same care of your personal safety as you do at home
  • If you see something you really want to buy, snap it up there and then – you rarely go back to a shop
  • Be a generous tipper
  • Use sunscreen
  • If you see a clean lavatory, use it – you never know when the next one's coming along
  • Take time to talk to local people – it will enrich your visit
The Holiday Handbook is published by Navigator Guides in the UK and costs £12.95. It can be bought direct from the publishers, from Amazon in the UK or from Amazon.com
