Food writer and TV chef Celia Brooks Brown offers a Friday afternoon Gastrotour at Borough Market to kick off the weekend. The new tour starts at 4pm and includes exclusive food and wine tastings, as well as meetings with some of the sellers of the market’s artisan foods. Borough Market – easily the best food market in London - celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, though it’s actually been thriving since before Roman times. After nearly closing down in the late 1990s, the last six years have seen its remarkable revival as a gourmet food retail market on Fridays and Saturdays.
Friday afternoon is a quieter period of the day, allowing Celia to uncover the market’s fascinating history and then take the food tour group through a line-up of tastings. These include superfood juices, chocolates, fine cheeses, olive oils, teas, and a Spanish tapas spread at Brindisa. This is followed by a tutored wine tasting at wine merchants Bedales, accompanied by food selected from the market.
Celia Brooks Brown was born in Colorado USA, and moved to Britain in 1989. She is the author of 6 vegetarian cookbooks, and writes for various magazines including olive. She regularly makes television appearances on the UKTV Food channel and the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen, and gives live cookery demonstrations at the word-famous Books for Cooks, the Divertimenti Cookery School, and other London venues. Celia also acts as a consultant for a number of supermarkets and international brands. So if you want to tour London's best food market, you couldn't be in better hands.
