Pet friendly hotels, bed and breakfasts and campsites across the British Isles are listed in the latest edition of a popular guidebook.

The book entitled Pet Friendly Places to Stay 2009 was published by the Automobile Association in 2008. It features accommodation which welcomes companion animals in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Channel Islands.

Over 1400 Hotels Which Welcome a Variety of Pets

The guide gives detailed descriptions of more than 1400 establishments. Entries include some of the British Isles most popular four star spa hotels. Many of the establishments accommodate not just dogs but also cats, small caged animals such as rabbits and hamsters and pet birds. A number have stables allowing guests to bring their horses and ponies.

The book should prove a boon to people who feel unable to leave their companion animals at home when going on holiday or who cannot find anyone to look after their pets during their absence. It will also help those owners who have returned from a well earned holiday only to find their dog or cat has pined while staying at kennels or in a cattery.

People travelling long distances to take part in equestrian events will be able to locate the nearest suitable hotel with stables enabling riders, horses and ponies to rest before and after taking part in competitions.

Pet Owners Should Read Each Hotel Entry Carefully

However, owners must read the guide to each establishment carefully and speak to the hotel before making a booking to ensure the facilities on offer will cater adequately for their pets. For example, some hotels provide separate accommodation for dogs which means kennels and outbuildings. This would obviously be unsuitable for dogs used to sleeping close to their owners.

Some Hotels Happy for Pets to be Left Unattended in Bedrooms

Other establishments are happy for pets to be left unattended in bedrooms and even provide signs to show an animal is in the room. A number of hotels and guesthouses go to great lengths to ensure their non-human guests are well catered for providing pre-bookable food, bowls, chews, dog scoops, disposal bags and leads.

Many accommodation providers have dog bins in their grounds and even provide pet sitting to allow the owners to enjoy some time alone. The hotel descriptions also give details of owners' pets living permanently on the premises.

Hotels May Charge a Fee For Accommodating Pets

Owners should be aware hotels may charge a fee for accommodating pets. Many also charge for any damage caused by an animal. Entries in 'Pet Friendly Places to Stay 2009' give details of the areas of each establishment open to pets. Dogs are normally only allowed access to gardens or grounds when on their leads. At campsites there may be specified areas where dogs can be exercised.

Copies of the book can be obtained from major book stores or online from its publisher The Automobile Association. The AA has also published a pocket sized guide entiled 500 Places to Stay With Your Dog 2009.
