If you have ever wanted to become a travel writer then the Bradt Travel Guides travel-writing competition is your opportunity.

I meet a lot of people who tell me they would like to be a travel writer. They would just love to spend their days journeying to exotic locations, living in luxury hotels, eating in expensive restaurants and lazing on pristine beaches.

I hate to disillusion them but travel writing is not like that. It is very hard work with long hours, dreadful pay and most of your time is spent sitting in front of a computer screen writing.

But you do get to visit exotic places and more importantly meet interesting people. You stay in accommodation which ranges from mosquito infested beach huts to some of the World’s top hotels; enjoy food from street kiosks to celebrity chefs restaurants and, yes, there is the odd pristine beach. Not that you get to laze on them. That’s what people on holiday get to do. You’re here to work.

If I have not succeeded in putting you off then here’s one way to become a travel writer.

Enter the 2007 Independent on Sunday/ Bradt Travel Guides travel-writing competition and win fabulous prizes including:

All you have to do is write a winning travel article.

You can prepare yourself by heading to the Destinations Travel Show at Earls Court, London from 1-4 February 2007. If you are planning a trip and would like to know more about where to go and what to see then go along and have a one-to-one chat with a travel expert at the ‘Ask Bradt’ zone at the show.

Bradt Travel Guides’ authors will be on hand to answer your travel questions and give you an insider’s knowledge of exciting countries, cities and wildlife, as well as speciality activities like trekking. There will also be tips on successful travel writing.

Flying in from Africa especially for the show is Bradt Africa writer Philip Briggs, author of 10 Bradt guides, and his wife, Ariadne Van Zandbergen, a professional photographer. Don’t miss the chance to ask them and many other Bradt experts your personal travel questions. You need to book a place in advance at Bradts website and ‘Ask Bradt’ zone. You can also save £10 by emailing Bradt for a free ticket to Destinations Travel Show.
