What we all need when we visit a foreign city, especially for the first time, is something that makes us feel at home. Something that helps us get around, that's like a combination of good guidebook, local magazine, a smart concierge and a friend who's lived in the city for years. London visitors from now on can get all that in an amazing service I've come across, for anyone booking their hotel through the LondonTown website. It's also free.
The free personalised guide service to London is so good I simply had to write about it. I've known of the website for years, and have often used it to find out what's on, or what an attraction's opening hours are. They've a good database of London information, including guided tours, day trips, family attractions, a theatre booking service and many other options.
One thing I've never used the site for is to book a hotel, as we live close enough to London to get back in the evening, and have friends in the city if we need to stay overnight. So how was I going to check this free service, as it's only available if you book a hotel through LondonTown? Easy. They did it for me anyway. They prepared me a guide based on the assumption that I was staying at the Hilton Trafalgar Hotel for four days. I expected a few pages listing a handful of events and exhibitions. What I got was a 31-page PDF file, 6Mb in size, that blew me away.
It told me where to get free maps, suggested five experiences from Circus Cabaret to a special spa, told me about walking tours, river cruises, how to have a day in Paris, reviewed the shows and plays that were on, and gave me pages and pages more of information. As if all this wasn't impressive enough, they also provide you with the phone number of your personal guide, someone you can call and ask questions of, no matter how dumb or demanding.
Now, I haven't booked a hotel through LondonTown so can't say if they meet their promise to have the best London hotel prices on the web (though they can book you throughout Britain too). But I am a seasoned traveler and I do know London, so know that they're offering a very impressive service here, with their free personal London guide. A definite thumbs up to them.
