Low Cost Airline Carries Over 44 million People in 12 Month Period

EasyJet carried more than 44 million passengers across its European route network in the 12 month period which ended on May 31.

This figure represents a 9.6 per cent increase in the number of people travelling on easyJet since the beginning of May 2008 despite the ongoing recession,

EasyJet Launches New Routes From Gatwick, Bristol and Manchester

The airline is also continuing to increase its network which already includes around 400 routes across 27 countries.

During May it launched flights from London Gatwick to

  • Dubrovnik
  • Naples
  • Santorini

Bristol to

  • Corfu
  • Bastia

Manchester to

  • Corfu

EasyJet Begins Three New Routes From Liverpool

June will see three new routes begin from the easyJet base at Liverpool's John Lennon Airport

  • Naples
  • Dubrovnik
  • Bordeaux

The low cost airline which began flying less than 14 years ago with just two Boeing 737 200's now has a fleet of 170 aircraft.

Initially those first Boeings were used to carry passengers between London Luton and Scotland's two main cities Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Today more than 289 million Europeans live within a one hour drive of an airport at which they can board an easyJet flight and the company has said more than 50 per cent of its passengers are now non-UK originating.

EasyJet is Number One Airline at Gatwick, Geneva and Milan

EasyJet says it is currently 2009's number one airline in the lucrative flight markets at London Gatwick, Geneva and Milan. It holds number two position in Paris.

The company will launch further new routes from the UK later in the summer.

EasyJet to Link Manchester With Athens And Dalaman

The first easyJet flight linking Manchester with Athens will take off on August 1. On August 6 services will begin between Manchester and Dalaman.

July will see the introduction of other European services to Mediterranean holiday areas from the cities of Lyon, Paris, Geneva, Berlin and Milan.

Amsterdam Was EasyJet's First European Destination From The UK

EasyJet's first services from the UK to Europe commenced in 1996 when the airline began flights between London Luton and Amsterdam.

The next two destinations added to the network were Nice and Barcelona.

In August 1996 the company's first low fares flight promotion advertised in the UK press led to four million calls in just four days.

The volume of enquiries led to problems at the easyJet Call Centre and demonstrated the need for an online reservations system.

First EasyJet Website Went Live in 1997

The airline's first website went live the following April but it was another 12 months before passengers were able to make bookings online.

Today easyJet still operates flights from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Luton.

It also flies to a number of destinations from Stansted and Gatwick and has become the main operator at Belfast International.

EasyJet Acquisition of GB Airways Increased Route Network

Its acquisition of BA franchisee GB Airways greatly increased its route network, enlarged its fleet and also added Manchester International to the list of UK airports it operates from.

Its Airbus and Boeing 737 700 aircraft make up one of the most modern fleets currently flying and its website is a one stop shop for people wishing to book flights, hotels, car hire and travel insurance.
