Craving authentic Mexican food in the UK? Lunch at Chilango in London and Sheffield is the cheaper alternative to buying a plane ticket to Mexico City.
If you’re looking for a lunch that’s fast, fresh, colourful and filling, Chilango has all of these. Branches of this ‘Fresh Mexican Kitchen’ are now open for business in North and East London on Upper Street and Fleet Street and with a precision-engineered production line, service is fast and furious but very friendly. Ordering your Burrito, Tacos or SaladFortunately the choices are quick and easy. Even the most indecisive among us should be able to keep up with the pace. Step one involves choosing a burrito, tacos or salad. Step two. you pick the meat (grilled chicken, steak or pork) or vegetarian filling and decide on pinto or black beans. At the final stage you select the salsa, which starts at a mild pico de gallo and ends with the spicy hot ‘chilango’. Within minutes you’re sinking your teeth into a wrap crammed full of Mexican goodness. You can also add sour cream, cheese and guacamole for a small cost. The guacamole is thick, creamy and unlike most of the insipid varieties sold in many UK supermarkets so definitely worth a try. Eat in or Take AwayFor two burritos with guacamole and a drink, the bill comes to around £14. If it sounds expensive keep in mind that the burritos are big and jam-packed with all of the aforementioned ingredients plus some coriander-lime rice so it should fill you up for a few more hours than a regular lunchtime sandwich. All eat-in meals come served on mini plastic trays but they are also available for take out if you prefer. Eager staff will probably try and talk you into ordering a marguerita. If you have a tendency to fall asleep after a midday drink then you can take a Mexican fruit cooler or a bottomless soda instead. Branches now Open in Islington, Fleet Street and SheffieldSeating at the Upper Street location is available on two levels. The ground floor has a couple of booths and some bar stools, including a handful at the shop front window. Upstairs the ambience is a little less chaotic and the seating more plentiful. You can also enjoy the luchador artwork, which compliments the loud pink, lime, blue and orange Chilango brand bubbles that decorate the walls and menus. With the two London and one Sheffield location open to date, Chilango does Mexican food proud and that’s not something that can be said of many pubs or restaurants in the UK.
